Introduction

Durga Das Uikey was born in 1963 in Mirapur, Betul district, and spent thirty years as a high-school teacher before he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Betul in 2019.

Re-elected in June 2024, he was sworn in the same month as Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Tribal Affairs — the Ministry responsible for the development of India’s Scheduled Tribes, who number 10.45 crore according to the 2011 Census.

Betul’s concerns, on the floor of the House

In his first term, from 2019 to 2024, he used Special Mentions and questions to raise the constituency’s needs: train stoppages and new rail lines, the protection of forests and the Satpura reservoir, relief for farmers in forest areas, and the conservation of historic forts.

He served on the Standing Committee on Defence and the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Tribal Affairs. Since 2024, as a Minister, he answers questions on behalf of the Ministry.

Responsibilities as Minister of State

The Ministry of Tribal Affairs leads the Government’s programmes for Scheduled Tribes. As Minister of State, he answers for the Ministry in Parliament, reviews its schemes and represents it at events across the country.

A teacher first

Before he entered Parliament, Durga Das Uikey’s public life was built around the classroom and the community. Digital Sansad records thirty years as a high-school teacher, regular newspaper writing, and lectures in colleges and schools.
